  • Doggersbank 1920 'Constant', A family endeavour

In the 50 years since Constant, a Doggersbank 1920, was delivered in 1974, the unassuming trawler has achieved great things. At 19.20m / 63’ in length, it began life as the largest Doggersbank built at that time and the first commissioned for export. Over the years, changes in ownership saw Constant journey from the Netherlands, where it was designed by Vripack and built by Jongert, to Curaçao, and later Malta. In 1982 it was sold to Jon and Ann Bowman of Anacortes, Washington, and a 40-year tenure as a treasured family vessel began. The family enjoyed myriad adventures cruising to Skagway, flying over Glacier Bay, circumnavigating Vancouver Island, and discovering Alaska’s Inside Passage and Canada’s Queen Charlotte Islands. “We did lots of exploring and often went ashore on land excursions,” she says. “All three of us are qualified pilots, so we’d take planes out and fly them over the icy glaciers and big tundra.” Click on the link below to read the full article: https://www.doggersbank.com/a-family-endeavour More to see: https://www.instagram.com/doggersbank_official/ https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCmYfHk8krQIsKt8Al5doPOA

  • Martina: Young at Heart

With systems that wouldn't look out of place on a superyacht, the nearly 40-year old Martina represents the highest pedigree of Doggersbank refits. I’m looking at something so priceless, it seems borderline illegal. The feeling is not unlike breaking into a vault without lifting a finger. There’s the impenetrable door made of steel-reinforced concrete, cast aside on its hinges to reveal a gleaming bounty of diamonds ordinarily stored in Switzerland. Or, in this case, Holland, where my inside man, Joost Mertens, is showing me an archive of something far more interesting: line drawings of the first Doggersbanks, penned by Dick Boon in 1968, forever changing motoryacht design. • Trooper: Through the Göta Canal and beyond

Some Doggersbanks traverse the treacherous Northwest Passage. Others head to the iceberg-flanked passageways of Antarctica. But in 2022, the 27m Moonen-built Trooper, captained by Darren Monk, chose to navigate Sweden’s infamous Göta Canal. Often referred to as Sweden's Blue Ribbon it forms part of a 390km long waterway that links up lakes and rivers to provide a route between the city of Gothenburg and the Baltic Sea. Its tight channels can prove problematic for the smallest of pleasure boats. In a yacht that pushes the perimeters of the narrow canals, 58 locks and 65 bridges, it’s a nail-biting test of skill and judgement that rewards with immeasurable scenic beauty. With no contingency plan if the yacht became stuck, the focus was on getting through a day at a time. Monk credits the Doggersbank design for its suitability in all scenarios, from blue water cruising in Portugal and Gibraltar (where Trooper cruised this year) to its easy handling in the trickiest of tight spaces, especially with a shallow draft. This article has been written by Julia Zaltzman, in close collaboration with captain Monk and the owner. • The creation of the Doggersbank design philosophy – Est. 1968

The tale of the Doggersbank began in 1965 when a man from the south of Holland turned up at the office of Dick Boon, Vripack founder, and requested a cutter-style motor yacht. Dick showed him drawings of a trawler type motor yacht that ticked all the boxes and the Doggersbank design philosophy was born, delivered in a comfortable, safe and efficient 10.8m family yacht. Shortly after, Dick received a second request for a motor sailer. He used the same hull, and in doing so paved the way for the Doggersbank series, one of the most enduring Dutch heritage brands that the yachting industry has ever known. Joost Mertens, sales director at Doggersbank, takes a journey with Dick aboard the Doggersbank 1780 'Trewes' on a trip down memory lane to learn more about the many design innovations over the past 50 years, the evolution of the contemporary Doggersbank Offshore, and the secret to why the compact platform remains so enduringly attractive. • FIRST CUT OF STEEL FOR THE ALL-NEW DOGGERSBANK 77’ OFFSHORE

From Maverick to Coy Koi, and Tivoli to Gayle Force – the smallest private Marshall Island flag boat to ever venture to the Southern Peninsula – It’s clear to see how the Doggersbank brand’s reputation precedes it. Now, with the larger 77’ Offshore, a new era of robust, owner operated adventures has begun. The Vripack-designed Doggersbank 77’ Offshore is the largest Doggersbank to be constructed at the Altena Shipyard in the Netherlands to date. It is also the first Doggersbank in the world to be fitted with a single engine PTO/PTI hybrid propulsion system that enables the boat to silently cruise for up to two hours at six knots. The batteries are charged through the PTO/PTI which is connected in line to the yacht’s single main engine, therefore providing redundancy. “The 77’ Offshore joins a large fleet of American-owned Doggersbanks, but this is the first semi-custom Doggersbank built for a West Coast owner, so it’s quite a moment.” Says Joost Mertens, Doggersbank’s sales director. The full-custom design package supplied by Vripack ensures comfortable, safe and long-range exploration on a proven concept, with extensive hull optimization using Vripack’s in-house Computational Fluid Dynamics analysis. The yacht’s length and beam, mandated by the owner’s harbour berth on the northwest coast of North America, means it sits just below the 24m regulatory threshold, and is the largest owner operated Doggersbank in the fleet. “The 67’ and 77’ Doggersbank Offshore models are designed with myriad features that make them suitable for self-piloted adventure,” says Mertens. “Both incorporate a foldable mast, a powerful bulbous bow and stern thruster that highlight the brand’s explorer heritage and adaptability.” The efficient PTO/PTI hybrid propulsion system delivers a high level of comfort and noise reduction at low speed, epitomising what the Doggersbank brand has come to represent. Other custom requests from the owner include a nozzle to protect the propellor and rudder from driftwood, which is common in the area where the boat will cruise, openable portholes for natural ventilation and a full-beam owner’s state room. Optimised hull lines ensure the yacht is both comfortable and highly fuel efficient, with a tank arrangement that allows for a staggering 2,500nm range with just under 50 liters per hour fuel consumption at a cruise speed of 8 knots. The full custom interior enjoys a supersized laundry and utility room on the lower deck, a watch bunk in the bridge for night crossings, and clear visibility from the main salon to both the bridge and lower deck via an open spiral staircase that links all three decks and is topped by a skylight. The interior features fine quarter-sawn American walnut and neutral base fabrics. It’s paired with chic decorative soft furnishings in warm tones that reflect North America’s radiant Indian summers. With the keel scheduled to be laid in early September 2023, the Doggersbank 77’ Offshore is set to deliver in 2025. “Owning a durable, Dutch-designed, steel-hulled explorer built in the Netherlands has been a long-held dream for this owner,” says Joost Mertens, Doggersbank’s sales director. “Realising his own full-custom Vripack-designed Doggersbank is something he’s delighted to be able to tick off his bucket list.” More to read: https://www.doggersbank.com/doggersbank-77-offshore

  • Gayle Force: to the edge of the world, and beyond

From Arctic voyages and world circumnavigations to family cruising on both sides of the Atlantic, the secret to the Doggersbank’s success lies in its ability to serve all owners’ needs. From Maverick to Coy Koi, and Tivoli to Gayle Force – the smallest private Marshall Island flag boat to ever venture to the Southern Peninsula – the list of Doggersbank builds is impressive. Gayle Force Heading to Antarctica is never a simple task. Even on board an expedition vessel the risks are plenty. But when cruising on an “unproven” 29m explorer – the smallest private Marshall Island flag boat to ever venture to the Southern Peninsula – you need to be sure of two things, a) that you have an open mind, and b) that the vessel is designed by Vripack. Nature pure Wildlife abounded, with humpback, fin and blue whales a plenty. Penguins were in their thousands, and every type of seal was sighted. The highlight for Captain Scott, however, were the two nights spent drifting with the ice in the Gerlache Straits. “We had amazing evenings there, it was truly beautiful. It felt like something out of Space Odyssey, semi-light out, just watching the ice, silently drifting together.”
